Ash Wednesday

Hello Second Grade Families,
This Wednesday is Ash Wednesday and it will begin the holy season of Lent in our Catholic faith.  This week, your children will be experiencing a variety of religious based activities.  On Monday, the second graders will be leading our school wide Rosary.  On Wednesday and on Friday, all of the students will be attending Mass.  In class, the students will have an Ash Wednesday themed lesson and we will also be learning that Jesus forgives through the Jesus Our Life religion series.  It is going to be a faith filled week, so here's to celebrating the gift of our Catholic traditions.

ELA (Strong Communicators)
Spelling ~ Homophones

Target Skills ~ Understanding Characters, Figurative Language, Question

Math (Resourceful Learners)
The students will continue to work in unit 6.  Unit 6 focuses on adding and subtracting to the hundreds place.  In class, the second graders will continue their math "sprints" to assist them in the skill of "automaticity" with their basic addition and subtraction facts.  
Please note, that the second graders could use some extra practice in memorizing their subtraction facts.  There are many free websites and I-pad apps that can assist your child in memorizing their basic subtraction facts.

  • Also, don't forget that good old fashioned flash cards can assist your child too!
Religion (Active Christians)
The students will continue learning the following religious concept utilizing the Jesus Our Life religion series.

  • Jesus Forgives
The second graders will lead our all school rosary that takes place on Monday, March 4th at 2:20pm.
The students will attend our all school Mass on Ash Wednesday at 8:15am.
The students will attend our all school Mass on Friday, at 8:15am.

Science
The students will continue learning about the properties of matter (solids, liquids, gas).

Homework

 Dear Families,
Help!  We need to assist the students in beginning trimester 3 strong!  Some of the students are starting to slide in the area of homework.  Please know that the homework that is given in the second grade is very reasonable.  Every child should read for 15 minutes and fill out their reading log.  On Thursday nights, every second grader should be preparing for their weekly spelling test.  These are the regular homework assignments for grade two.  I philosophically do not believe in taking away recess from a child due to not bringing their homework, because at this young age, they need to be able to burn off energy and to get their wiggles out prior to returning to class.  I am greatly appreciative of your support and efforts in this area.  Thank you in advance for your help!

  • Read nightly for at least 15 minutes and log your reading!
  • Study your weekly spelling words for Friday's test!
  • If a child does not complete and return their homework on Friday, it will be reflected on our Class Dojo website, as well as, on the child's report card.  The child will also have to "clip down" in our classroom and give me four raffle tickets.  One ticket for everyday that they decided not to complete their homework.

  Hello Second Grade Families, Happy Mother's Day to all of our wonderful second grade moms!  I hope that you each have had a beautiful day!  May is off to a busy start and your children are anticipating the gift of summer that's right around the corner.  Below are a few items to keep you in the loop about both school wide behavioral expectations and second grade academics. The students are required to have their shirts tucked in while school is in session.  Jackets are no longer needed as it is now warming up. The second graders will have a Spelling test this week, so make sure to have your child study in order to best prepare them for their test on Friday. There will be no more reading homework for the remainder of the school year! Let's Take A Moment to Stop And Smell the Roses!

  Hello Second Grade Families, There are only ten more days of school left!  Let's stop to savor these last few weeks of second grade.  Please know that your child will not have anymore spelling tests, or nightly reading homework.  Enjoy the extra family time and allowing your child to get a full night's rest.
