Happy Thanksgiving

Hello Second Grade Families,
Thanksgiving is upon us, and there is so much to be grateful for;  work for our hands to do, good food, caring families, treasured friends, and our faith.  Thank you all for your support this school year and for entrusting me to care and nurture your children academically, socially, and spiritually.  May you all have a very blessed Thanksgiving!  Please know that we have an early noon dismissal on Wednesday and that there is no school on Thursday and Friday, so that we can all honor the gift of Thanksgiving.  Please continue reading to discover what will be taking place for the next three days within the second grade classroom and right here at ACS.

ELA
The students will have Thanksgiving based reading and writing activities this week.   Below you will find the Thanksgiving based activities.
The students will:

  • Create a book of Thanksgiving Blessings!  This book will allow the children to understand the gift of gratitude for all of life's daily blessings.
  • complete their persuasive essay.  The children had to use the viewpoint of a turkey in order to persuade Farmer Jake from making them a part of the Thanksgiving feast.  The students really enjoyed this writing activity.
  • listen to a read aloud that helps them to understand the history behind Thanksgiving.
  • read a Thanksgiving passage and respond to questions that correspond with the text.
The children will not have their regular ELA lessons and so, there will not be any Spelling words for this week, or homework based activities.  Enjoy the extra family time!

Math
The students will enjoy Thanksgiving based math games and activities that foster basic addition and subtraction concepts.

Religion
The students will attend our school wide Community Prayer that takes place on Monday, November 25th at 8:10 am.

The students will be honoring our classroom saint, St. Kateri Tekakwitha, by creating artistic Native American vests to wear to our school wide Thanksgiving Feast.  A big "thank you" to all of the parents who helped support this project!  Our class is grateful for the gift of St. Kateri!  She teaches us to care for our environment, to care for others, and to honor God through simplicity and humility.  St. Kateri, pray for us!

Last week, the students learned the four liturgical colors of our faith.  If time permits, the students will begin learning about the liturgical calendar this week.

The students will pray throughout their school day and this includes at daily Pledge/Prayer, before lunch, and prior to dismissal.

Science
The students will continue learning about animals and their habitats when we return from our Thanksgiving Break.  Please be on the look out for an empty shoebox, as your child will be creating a habitat for an animal in the next few weeks!
