A Salute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day!
I hope that you and your families had a wonderful extended weekend and time to reflect upon the powerful messages of a great fellow American that we know as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. His messages of hope, love, and acceptance are timeless. His "I Have a Dream Speech" still resonates today and it still gives Americans goose bumps when we hear it. This week, your children will continue to learn about the history of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his great impact on our American history. Target Skill ~ Study Structure, Understanding Character, Infer/Predict
Math ~ The students will focus on basic facts and their relationships. The students will continue to work on their basic addition and subtraction skills. The children are about to complete Unit 4! Next week, the students will begin Unit 5 which focuses on 2 digit subtraction.
Social Studies ~ The students will continue their lessons on our American history! These lessons will be taking place throughout the entire month of January. The students will be learning about:

If time permits, the students will experience a STREAM activity in our classroom. The students will be creating an igloo out of marshmallows and toothpicks. The challenge is that the children will be given a paper polar bear that must be able to enter and exit from the top of its den.

- The 13 colonies
- How the colonists dissatisfaction with English rule led to the Revolutionary War
- The creation of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights
- The three branches of government
- The concept that America is a Representative Democratic Republic
- The responsibility of voting

Religion ~ The students will continue to learn and practice "The Examination of Conscience" to prepare them for the sacrament of Reconciliation.
The students will also utilize their Religion text book to assist them in growing in their faith. This week's lessons focus on the baptism of Jesus and the story of the Good Samaritan.
