November Days!
Hello Second Grade Families,
Welcome to the second week of November. Here's to the month where we give thanks to God for all of the blessings that he has so generously given to us. Your children are off to a wonderful start this month! Last week, the students completed a formal persuasive writing sample on "Save the Turkey!" The students had to create a writing sample persuading the farmer to not choose them for the main course this Thanksgiving! The students also completed their very first STREAM lesson that assisted them in understanding why birds build nests. This week, the students will begin a project based lesson in class. The children will be creating an animal habitat utilizing a shoe box. However, we are in need of your help! Each child will need to bring a shoe box and a small stuffed animal (beanie babies work best) that they would like to discover more about. They then will be designing a habitat based on their research utilizing a shoe box. The kids will also need to bring in odds and ends to decorate their animal's habitat.
Ideas of materials for your child:
Please see the images below to assist you and your child with this in class project. Our class will begin this activity on Thursday afternoon and hope to complete our habitats by Monday afternoon.

Ideas of materials for your child:
- Perhaps your child would like to print off a background from your computer that represents the habitat of the animal selected
- Find craft materials that your child could use to allow them to design a realistic habitat of their selected animal (moss, rocks, stickers, cottonballs, fake plant material, small plastic items, etc.) Be creative and think simplistically!
Please see the images below to assist you and your child with this in class project. Our class will begin this activity on Thursday afternoon and hope to complete our habitats by Monday afternoon.

Reading ~
Math Ideas ~
- IXL
- Download a child centered math app on an I-pad and let your child practice their basic math facts. Here are some suggestions, Sushi Monster, Prodigy Math, or 2nd Grade Math.
- Mathplayground.com is a free math based website for kids to practice their facts on too!
Spelling Ideas ~
Have your child practice their spelling words using shaving cream! When my kids were in the primary grades they loved practicing their spelling words on the shower wall while they were scrubbing up every Thursday night. It is a fun way to practice their spelling the night before their weekly test! Another idea, is to have your child use Scrabble tiles to spell out their words, or how about magnetic letters on a cookie sheet.
