Parent-Teacher Conferences

Hello Second Grade Families,
It's time for our parent-teacher conferences!  Please know that your child will have full days of school on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of this week.  However, Thursday will be a noon dismissal day and there is no school on Friday due to the scheduled parent-teacher conferences.  After school care is not available on either Thursday, or Friday of this week.  Please know that I greatly look forward to partnering with you and discussing your child's academic, social/emotional, and spiritual development.  Thank you in advance for taking time out of your very busy schedules to meet with me.  Please continue reading to discover all that will be taking place both inside our second grade classroom and right here at ACS.

ELA
Essential question that the students will answer:  
How is a school like a community?
Target Skills:  Story Structure, Author's Word Choice, and Visualization
Writing Focus:  Narrative Writing (True story)
Grammar Focus:  Singular and Plural Nouns
Spelling Focus:  Consonant Blends with r, l, s
Due to the short week, your child will not have a weekly Spelling Test.  Instead, we will have spelling based activities to assist us with the skill of blends.

 Math
The students will now review and practice two mathematical skills.  The skill of counting and identifying the value of different money combinations and accurately telling time.  By the end of this week, this unit from our "Go Math" series will be complete.

 Social Studies
The students will continue their geography lessons.                                                                             

These lessons will include:

  • how to read a map (lesson completed)
  • the components and parts of a map (lessons completed)
  • identifying and locating the 7 continents and the 5 oceans of our world (lessons completed)
  • identifying different types of landforms(currently being taught)
  • applying knowledge to answer questions utilizing a map (lessons completed)
  • designing and creating a map (activity completed)
Religion
The students will utilize their Jesus Our Life religion series to focus on the following concept:  
Becoming a Child of God

 The students will pray throughout their school day and this includes at daily Pledge/Prayer, before lunch, and prior to dismissal.

Homework
The students are expected to read nightly for 15 to 20 minutes and to complete a simple reading log.              
Due to conferences, please sign your child's agenda on Wednesday evening, and please also sign your child's reading log.
Your child's reading log will be due on Thursday for this week only because the student's will not have school on Friday.  Enjoy the extra day off!

  Hello Second Grade Families, Welcome to Holy Week.  In one week the gift of the resurrection will once again be celebrated.          Here's to a week of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.  Three simple actions to honor and to bring us closer to our savior, Jesus Christ.  It's my hope that you each have a beautiful Holy Week, a blessed Easter Sunday, and a wonderful Spring Break.  This week will be quite unique for your children, and so, I have listed key changes and/or activities that will be taking place this week. The Month of May Has Arrived!

  Hello Second Grade Families, Welcome to the month of May!  This last month of school is bound to fly, and typically the children become more fatigued and excited for the end of the school year.  Please also know that this will be the final week for reading homework, however, the children will have a weekly spelling test for the next two weeks. It's the last week of school!

Hello Second Grade Families, We have arrived at the very last week of school!  This week is going to be super simple as I am now busily grading assessments, working on your child's report cards, and completing cumulative files for your children.  Inside your children's summer gift from me was a "memory book" for the students to work on.  I'd highly encourage having your children complete a few pages each day to assist them in practicing their writing skills.   Also, have you heard of the "summer slide?"  The summer slide is a term educators use to explain children "sliding back" in their learning due to not engaging in any academic activities over the course of the summer.  However, there's a way to prevent your child from experiencing the summer slide.  Research indicates, that students who read daily and practice their math skills often avoid the summer slide.  Here are a few tips to assist your child this summer.
