October is here!

Hello Second Grade Families,
October has arrived and even your children have commented that the air is feeling cooler!  Yippee!  Here's to a wonderful, yet busy month ahead.  Please note that your children do not have school this upcoming Friday, October 11th, due to Educator Day for the teachers within the diocese.  The students also have Monday, October 14th, off from school.   May you all enjoy this much needed  "Fall Break."  Due to this change in our schedule, your children will have their weekly Spelling Test on Thursday and your child's reading log will be due on Thursday too.  Please continue reading to discover all that will be taking place during this short 4 day school week.

ELA
Essential question that the students will answer:  
What can you learn from planting a garden?
Target Skills:  Conclusions, Story Structure, Analyze/Evaluate
Writing Focus:  Informative Writing
Grammar Focus:  Proper Nouns
Spelling Focus:  Double Consonants and ck
Review and Challenge Words:  will, off, across, pocket

Math
The students will continue studying Place Value and Addition concepts.

Science
The students will begin studying Human versus Natural elements.

Religion
The students will utilize their Jesus Our Life religion series to focus on the following concept:  
God Gives Us His Laws (The Ten Commandments)

The students will pray throughout their school day and this includes at daily Pledge/Prayer, before lunch, and prior to dismissal.


The students will attend our school wide Rosary on Monday, October 7th at 2:20 p.m.

Homework
The students are expected to read nightly for 15 to 20 minutes and to complete a simple reading log.        
All reading logs are due on Thursday for this week due to our Fall Break.  If a child does not return their homework on Thursday, the consequence will be to "clip down" on our behavior chart and forfeit a raffle ticket.

The students will need to study for their weekly Spelling test that will take place on Thursday.
 Any child that receives a 100% on Monday's Spelling Pre-test , will be given a "Challenge" list of words to practice for the week.  The students working on the "Challenge List" will be tested on their list of words this coming Thursday.
