Happy Thanksgiving!

 Happy Thanksgiving Second Grade Families,

May this week bring you all the blessing of good food, a happy home,  the gift of faith, and surrounded by those you hold dear.  This week, I am thankful for the blessing of our second graders and for all of the support of their families.  Thank you for a tremendously wonderful 4 months of school!  It's a short 3 day week, but it's going to be full of fun Thanksgiving themed learning activities.

Please continue reading this newsletter to discover what will be taking place this week at ACS.

ELA

This week, your children will be stepping outside of their Journey's Reading series.  The second graders will be working on a formal persuasive writing piece.  Your child will be creating a writing sample where he/she is required to pretend that they are a Thanksgiving turkey and their job is to convince Farmer Brown not to make them the main course for this year's Thanksgiving feast!  They are each hoping to receive a "Pardon" from being the main dish of this year's Thanksgiving meal.  It's going to be a fun, creative, yet meaningful writing piece for the second graders.

Math

This week, your children will not be working inside their Go Math text.  Instead, the second graders will be experiencing "Math stations."  Our stations will focus on practicing our addition skills, our graphing skills, and working on IXL utilizing a device.

Social Studies
The students will continue learning the history of the pilgrims journey on the Mayflower and their friendship with the Wampanoag Indian tribe.  The students will also continue learning about how significant the friendship of Squanto was to the survival of the Pilgrim people.  The students will also learn about other Native American tribes and their cultures/traditions.

STREAM ~ Your children will experience a Thanksgiving STREAM lesson on Wednesday morning.  For this activity, your children will be designing a Thanksgiving turkey!  The details can be found below.

To begin, students will listen to a passage about Turkeys. This passage provides information about where turkeys live, what they look like, and some of their behaviors. Students write down interesting facts that they learned and compare and contrast male and female turkeys. If students can't write, you can discuss as a group. After this, they complete the STEM challenge.  The students will work individually but can brainstorm in groups. Students use the facts they learned such as colors and structural features to create their turkeys.  They are also given constraints such as “the turkey must be at least 9″ tall and 4” wide.  It must have at least one moving part, and the turkey must be able to stand on a table by itself.  Each student will need their own pair of scissors and glue stick/glue.  Teachers and volunteers will be in charge of measuring the turkey and handing out supplies.

Religion
The students will experience one sacramental preparation lesson this Monday.

The students will pray throughout their school day and this includes at daily Pledge/Prayer, before lunch, and prior to dismissal.

The students will attend Mass on Wednesday, November 25th at 8:15 a.m. inside St. Gabriel's Catholic Church.

The second graders will continue learning the prayer for the intercession of St. Michael the Archangel per Father Chad's request.  All of the ACS students will be saying the prayer each time we attend Mass on Wednesday mornings and in our second grade classroom.
