Hello Spring!


 Happy First Day of Spring ACS Families!

Well, Spring is in the air!  Flowers are blooming, birds are singing, and the weather is glorious!  This week, your children will begin learning all about plants to kick off the season of Spring.  The season that brings us the gift of renewed hope and beauty.  It's also the season where we soon will celebrate the resurrection of our savior, Jesus Christ.  May you all find your spirits lifted as we approach the gift of Easter Sunday.

ELA


Essential question that the students will answer:  

How is art connected to the past?
Target Skills:  Conclusions, Sequence of Events, Summarizing
Writing Focus:  Informative Writing
Grammar Focus:  Irregular Verbs
Spelling Focus:  Suffixes -y, -ly, -ful

Math
The students will continue to learn about measurement concepts.

Science
The students will begin learning about plants.  Concepts that will be taught will include the parts of a plant, the lifecycle of plants, identifying parts of plants that we eat, (examples:  carrots are roots, corn is a seed that we eat, cabbage is a leaf, asparagus is both a stem and a flower that many people enjoy eating, etc.)  The students will also experience a wide variety of hands on plant themed activities and some experiments too which will include embracing conservation ideas to best serve the beautiful gift God gave us...Earth.  Learning about plants and animals is so much fun and is very engaging to second graders.  What a gift!

Religion
To assist our students during these Spring months where friendships can experience social struggles, the class and I will be praying a prayer written by St. Francis of Assisi each morning as we begin class.  Below you will find the prayer.  Please feel free to pray it each day during the final weeks of Lent.



The students will have another sacramental preparation lesson this week.

The students will pray throughout their school day and this includes at daily Pledge/Prayer, before lunch, and prior to dismissal.

The second graders will continue praying for the intercession of St. Michael the Archangel per Father Chad's request.  All of the ACS students will be saying the prayer each time we attend Mass on Wednesday mornings.   The students have memorized the "Act of Contrition" and are prepared to say this prayer when they receive the holy sacrament of Reconciliation.

Monday ~ Art at 12:10

Tuesday ~ P.E. at 2:25

                  Spanish at 12:00

Wednesday ~ Mass Day at 8:15 a.m. 

                        Spanish 9:40 and Music at 1:00

Thursday ~    P.E. at 2:25

Friday ~ No special area classes


Don't forget that your child has access to several academic computer sites to enhance their learning at home.

Here is a quick list to assist your child in their academic growth at home.

  • RAZ kids ( Your child may utilize this site to complete their nightly reading homework.)
  • IXL (Section S focuses on key second grade measurement concepts)
  • Class Dojo!  This site can be accessed each day to allow your child to gain insights on their behavioral decisions from the day.  The students will earn points that then allow them to upgrade their site's avatar and the site will allow the students to view social/emotional developmental videos that were viewed in class from that specific day.  It's such an engaging behavioral tool and it motivates and empowers the students to give their very best efforts each day.
  • So far in Class Dojo, your children have focused on the social/emotional skills of having a "Growth Mindset," how to be "Perseverant," how to be "Empathetic," what it means to show "Gratitude," and how they can tackle "Big Challenges" in life!  

Upcoming Events

  • March 25, Thursday:  Save this date.  School Blessing on the Feast of the Annunciation.  Mass celebrated with Bishop Olmsted at 9:30 a.m. All are welcome. 
  • Clothing Drive:  St. Gabriel’s St. Vincent De Paul Conference, Knights, WINGS and ACS Vibrant Vinnies will have a clothing drive for the homeless before and after all Masses March 13 and 14, 2021 in the south parking lot.  See attached flyer for the many needs of the homeless.
  • Holy Thursday  April 1 is a half day with Field Day in the morning.
  • Good Friday April 2 no school, but Michael Garibaldi, Director of Adult Formation at St. Gabriel’s,  is hoping to plan and direct a Live Stations of the Cross.  More information to come.
  • Evening Under the Stars on April 24 more information to come.

Homework

This week, the students will need to read each night for at least 15 minutes and log their reading utilizing their ENGAGE IT reading log. 

 The reading log is due on Friday, March 26th!


The students will also need to study for their Spelling Test that will take place on Friday.

  Hello Second Grade Families, Welcome to Holy Week.  In one week the gift of the resurrection will once again be celebrated.          Here's to a week of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.  Three simple actions to honor and to bring us closer to our savior, Jesus Christ.  It's my hope that you each have a beautiful Holy Week, a blessed Easter Sunday, and a wonderful Spring Break.  This week will be quite unique for your children, and so, I have listed key changes and/or activities that will be taking place this week. The Month of May Has Arrived!

  Hello Second Grade Families, Welcome to the month of May!  This last month of school is bound to fly, and typically the children become more fatigued and excited for the end of the school year.  Please also know that this will be the final week for reading homework, however, the children will have a weekly spelling test for the next two weeks. It's the last week of school!

Hello Second Grade Families, We have arrived at the very last week of school!  This week is going to be super simple as I am now busily grading assessments, working on your child's report cards, and completing cumulative files for your children.  Inside your children's summer gift from me was a "memory book" for the students to work on.  I'd highly encourage having your children complete a few pages each day to assist them in practicing their writing skills.   Also, have you heard of the "summer slide?"  The summer slide is a term educators use to explain children "sliding back" in their learning due to not engaging in any academic activities over the course of the summer.  However, there's a way to prevent your child from experiencing the summer slide.  Research indicates, that students who read daily and practice their math skills often avoid the summer slide.  Here are a few tips to assist your child this summer.
