Language Arts ~ Purple
Math ~ Blue
Social Studies and Science ~ Green
Special Areas ~ Yellow
This color coding system will also be utilized in the weekly newsletter to effectively communicate what learning will be taking place in each subject area for the week.
Assisting the children in growing socially and emotionally is also an integral part to being in the second grade and each year I give my best in creating social/emotional based lessons to best assist the children in growing their interpersonal skills.
Rules and Procedures
This week, there will be a wealth of time spent on teaching the second graders about our daily routines, classroom and school rules, and learning second grade procedures. There will also be time dedicated to the expectations for learning in the second grade and how to live out our school's mission statement. At ACS, we strive for the children to be...
Strong Communicators
Thoughtful Citizens
Active Christians
Resourceful Learners
Time will also be reserved for social/emotional activities to foster a sense of a classroom family that takes care of and looks out for one another.
ELA (English Language Arts)
The students will:
- practice their penmanship
- learn about different types of sentences
- create their first writing sample
- spend time reviewing basic language arts skills
- learn about open and closed syllables
- be assessed in their reading fluency and comprehension
Social Studies
The students will begin learning what a "Constitution" is and the history of the American Constitution. Then, the second graders will be creating their very own second grade constitution which will serve as "The Laws of the Land" within the second grade classroom.
Religion
The students will begin their Discipline With a Purpose Lessons. These lessons assist the children in developing 5 essential skills which enhance their learning and their social/emotional well being. The five skills that are taught are the skills of:
- Listening
- Following Directions
- Asking Meaningful Questions
- Sharing
- Developing Positive Social Skills
This week will focus on teaching the students that these skills unlock their "Super Powers" in becoming strong learners within our second grade classroom.
Homework
The students will not have homework until after Labor Day.
I want the students to adapt to their new learning schedule and make sure that they are getting plenty of rest during the first month of school. However, I do know that some families would like to hit the ground running and would like for their students to begin some form of homework. With this being said, I will send home an "optional" reading log assignment with the students on Monday. Please know if your child chooses to complete his/her nightly reading tasks for the month of August, I will give him/her extra credit points that will go towards their homework grade and their end of the first trimester reading grade too!
