Let's Fall Into Learning!

Hello Second Grade Families,

The second grade schedule is in full swing and the majority of the students are doing a tremendously wonderful job on completing and returning their homework.  May this newsletter serve as a gentle reminder that second graders are expected to read nightly for at least 15 to 20 minutes and are to log what they read utilizing their second grade reading log.  Please know that it will be documented on the second grade report card should any child not do their homework on a regular basis.  Thank you in advance for your support and efforts.  The idea of homework is to foster and promote both responsibility and growth in the area of reading fluency.  Here's to achieving 100% participation in the second grade homework.

You can do it second graders!

Math

The students have moved into addition and subtraction concepts.

Please know that the students are expected to become fluent in adding to 20 and subtracting from 20.

Your children have visited a new math based web site called "Splash Math."  On this site, your children are working diligently to practice and master math concepts that are taught in class.  This upcoming Friday, each second grader will be arriving home with a list of directions to access "Splash Math" from home.  Please know that this is completely optional and will be left as an individual choice for every second grade family to decide upon.

Social Studies

The students will continue growing their map skills!

Here's what the students are currently learning in order to assist them in better understanding the purpose of maps, how maps work, and how maps allow us to better understand the world around us.  Below you will discover the key concepts that will be taught in the second grade classroom.

The students will be able to:

  • Identify and Recognize the seven continents (concept has been taught)
  • Identify and Recognize the five oceans (concept has been taught)
  • Understand and Demonstrate the 4 cardinal directions (concept has been taught)
  • Identify a Compass Rose (concept has been taught)
  • Read a Map (concept has been taught and will be continually practiced)
  • Create a Map
  • Identify and Understand what a natural landform is (Examples:  mountains, lakes, rivers, hills, plateaus, peninsula, plains, etc.)

Religion
This week, the students will focus on "God is Offended" utilizing the Jesus Our Life Religion series.  This lesson will assist the students as they prepare their hearts and souls for the sacrament of First Reconciliation this school year.

  • The students will attend an all school Mass on Wednesday, September 22nd at 8:15 a.m. inside St. Gabriel's Catholic Church.
  • The ACS all school Community Prayer will take place on Friday, September 24th at 8:10 a.m. at the lunch pavillion.

Homework

This week your child will have reading and spelling homework The second graders are expected to read nightly, and fill out their reading log.  Please sign your child's homework on Thursday evenings.  Every second grader will need to hand in their homework on Friday.  Also note, that explicit directions are given in class to the students.  Research shows that students that read nightly for a minimum of 15 to 20 minutes, and then log their reading,  typically show the most gains in the area of reading fluency.

All of the students will need to prepare and study their list of Spelling words.

The second grade Spelling test will take place this Friday.
