Grateful, Thankful, and Blessed!
Hello Second Grade Families,
Happy Thanksgiving! May each and every one of you have a blessed Thanksgiving surrounded by loved ones and those that you hold dear. This week, your children will not have their regularly planned lessons. There is no homework this week. There will be no spelling test this week, and the children will not be practicing their reading skills from their Journey's textbook. Instead, the children will be focusing on creating a persuasive writing sample, reading about the history of the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Indian Tribe, and we'll be covering some language arts skills that will enhance your children's knowledge in the area of grammar.
Please continue reading to discover all that will be taking place in this short, yet busy week!
ELA
The students will:
- be learning all about idioms!
- create a persuasive writing sample that focuses on the children pretending that they are a turkey. The kids will have to persuade the farmer not to make them the main course at the Thanksgiving feast this year! The students really enjoy this engaging writing sample.
- be reading about the history of the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Indian Tribe.
Math
This week, the students will continue working in Unit 5 utilizing the Big Ideas textbook.
This unit focuses on subtracting within 100.
If your child struggles with memorizing basic subtraction facts, please know that "Sushi Monster" is a great app found on Apple that can be downloaded onto a device. It may assist your children in becoming fluent in their basic addition and subtraction facts.
Social Studies
The students have already been learning about the history behind the very first Thanksgiving.
The
students will continue learning about the pilgrims, the Wampanoag
tribe, and the reason behind celebrating the holiday we call
Thanksgiving.
Science
If time permits, the students will learn about protecting our natural resources.
An all school STREAM event will take place on Wednesday morning!
Religion
The students will be attending Mass in the new church on Wednesday, November 24th at 8:15 a.m.
