Advent ~ Week 3 ~ Joy

 Hello Second Grade Families,

Welcome to the third week of Advent.  This week the candle that symbolizes "Joy" has been lit!  The birth of Jesus renews our spirits with the gift of joy.  This week will certainly bring the gift of joy to the second grade.  The Christmas concert will take place on Thursday, December 16th at 6:30 in the new St. Gabriel's Catholic Church.  It will certainly be a joyous occasion.  Also, on Friday, December 17th, the second graders will enjoy our "Christmas Around the World" classroom celebration!   Also, if possible, please have your child bring their favorite board game on Friday.  The children will have time to play their board game with their classmates.

Please continue reading to discover all that will be taking place inside our second grade classroom and right here at ACS.

ELA

  • The students will be focusing on creating a formal writing sample this week.  The topic will be about "How to properly decorate a Christmas tree."  This will be the children's formal "How to" writing piece which is a second grade standard.
  • The students will also enjoy a story called, "Poppleton in Winter."
  • Please know that there will be no spelling test, or reading homework for this week.  Enjoy the extra family time together during this very blessed season!

Math

  • The students will focus this week on becoming more fluent in subtraction.  Mastery of these basic facts are such a tremendous gift as the students move forward into more mathematical concepts.   We'll be working on math drills and on the Splash Math website!  If time permits, the students will also enjoy some engaging subtraction based games.
Social Studies
The students will continue learning about Christmas Around the World.  This unit allows the second graders to understand that different countries and/or cultures celebrate Christmas in different ways and that each culture has its own traditions and customs.

Don't forget that every second grader has access to the following websites to assist them in the areas of Reading and Math

  • RAZ Kids (the students may use this site to complete their nightly reading homework)
  • Splash Math Learning (This site will assist your child in mastering mathematical concepts that are taught inside our second grade classroom.)

Homework
The students will not have any homework this week!  Merry Christmas!
