Hello January!
Hello Second Grade Families,
Welcome to January and our second week back from the Christmas vacation!
Your children are off to a great start! Last week, the students organized and cleaned their desks. They also were given a new seating assignment. Then, the kids were introduced to our new behavioral learning site called, "Class Dojo." Finally, most of the students have earned fifteen points from Class Dojo which permitted them to rescue a "Desk Pet." It was a busy, but exciting week for the second graders!
This week, the students will continue to have social/emotional/behavioral lessons via the Class Dojo website. The students will also continue to earn points on Class Dojo which will allow them to purchase items from the "Pet Shop" for their new desk pet. Please know that Class Dojo and the desk pets are an engaging way for the students to grow, develop, and make positive behavioral decisions. Below, I have added an image of a desk pet from another teacher's classroom to give you an idea of what a desk pet is and what this behavioral system looks like. Also note, that the students and I thoroughly went over all of the behavioral rules and expectations in properly using our desk pets and for the second half of this school year.
I'm sure your second grader will be excitedly relaying to you all of the positive learning that is taking place with their desk pets!
Please continue reading to stay in the loop for this week!

Science
The students will continue their lessons on animals and their habitats.
The second graders are learning about a wide variety of animal habitats, how scientists classify animals (examples: fish, birds, reptiles, mammals, amphibians, etc.), and about animal traits and their behaviors. It's also a second grade standard that the students begin learning about ecosystems and the importance of conservation. The desk pets will compliment these lessons and will allow the concepts to become more meaningful to the students. These concepts will be our focus for the entire month of January.
Religion
- The students will attend Mass on Wednesday, January 12th at 8:10 a.m. inside St. Gabriel's Catholic Church.
- The students will utilize their Jesus Our Life textbooks to focus on "God Gives Us His Laws" this week.
- The students will be introduced to the Act of Contrition and we will begin learning this prayer to prepare the students for the sacrament of First Reconciliation.
Don't forget that every second grader has access to the following websites to assist them in the areas of Reading and Math
- RAZ Kids (the students may use this site to complete their nightly reading homework)
- Splash Math Learning (This site will assist your child in mastering mathematical concepts that are taught inside our second grade classroom.)
- If time permits, the students will begin learning how to type using our class set of Chrome Books this week!
