Hello February!

Welcome to the month of February to our Second Grade Families,

 This week, your children will move back into their regular academic routine and the students will be introduced to writing in cursive!   Also note, that the students will be celebrating Valentine's Day on February 13th at around 1:30 in order to keep Ash Wednesday sacred on Valentine's Day.  Please have your child bring a Valentine for 22 students.  It is probably easiest if your child does not label the outside of their Valentine.  However, I'm certain some of your children may enjoy addressing the envelopes, so a class list will be going home this week just in case it should be needed.  On February 13th, the kids will enjoy decorating a heart shaped sugar cookie, passing out Valentine's, and enjoying a video as a class.  Please continue reading this newsletter to discover all that will be taking place this week both in our classroom and right here at ACS!

Grammar ~ The Verb "Be"
Writing ~ Narrative Writing
Target Skill ~ Understanding Characters, Author's Word Choice, Analyze/Evaluate

Math ~ The students will continue their lessons on 2 digit subtraction.

Social Studies ~ The students will continue their lessons on our American history!  These lessons will be taking place throughout the entire month of January.  The students will be learning about:
  • American symbols and holidays (Lessons Completed)
  • The 13 colonies (Lessons Completed)
  • How the colonists dissatisfaction with English rule led to the Revolutionary War (Lessons Completed)
  • The creation of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights (Lessons Completed)
  • The three branches of government
  • The concept that America is a Representative Democratic Republic
  • The responsibility of voting
Religion ~ The students will continue to  learn and practice "The Examination of Conscience" to prepare them for the sacrament of Reconciliation.  

The students will also utilize their Religion text book to assist them in growing in their faith.  This week's lessons focus on "Asking Forgiveness" and "Jesus Forgives."

The students will pray during a variety of times throughout our school day.

  • Spelling City(spellingcity.com) ~ This site will help your child in preparing for their weekly Spelling tests.
  • IXL ~ This site will assist your child in their math skills.
  • Your child's username and passwords to these sites are located inside their agendas.

Tuesday
Please read for 15 to 20 minutes and write down the title of your book utilizing the weekly “Reading Log.”
Complete the math skill page.

Wednesday
Please read for 15 to 20 minutes and write down the title of your book utilizing the weekly “Reading Log.”
Complete the Grammar skill page.

Thursday
Please read for 15 to 20 minutes and write down the title of your book utilizing the weekly “Reading Log.”
Complete the spelling practice page.

Don’t forget to have one of your parents sign your reading log and your agenda this evening!

Study for your Spelling Test which will take place on Friday.

  Hello Second Grade Families, The last week of the school year has arrived...and so, here's to making this last week together fun, special, and positively memorable!  Please know that we will be doing a lot of unique and engaging learning activities this week in order to keep the students learning in a more interesting and exciting way! May is in full swing!

  Hello Second Grade Families, Happy Mother's Day to all of our wonderful second grade moms!  I hope that you each have had a beautiful day!  May is off to a busy start and your children are anticipating the gift of summer that's right around the corner.  Below are a few items to keep you in the loop about both school wide behavioral expectations and second grade academics. The students are required to have their shirts tucked in while school is in session.  Jackets are no longer needed as it is now warming up. The second graders will have a Spelling test this week, so make sure to have your child study in order to best prepare them for their test on Friday. There will be no more reading homework for the remainder of the school year! All of the second graders will soon be assessed on their reading fluency prior to exiting the grade level.  Your child's reading abilities will be communicated to you with your child's report card at the end of the school year. Let's Take A Moment to Stop And Smell the Roses!

  Hello Second Grade Families, There are only ten more days of school left!  Let's stop to savor these last few weeks of second grade.  Please know that your child will not have anymore spelling tests, or nightly reading homework.  Enjoy the extra family time and allowing your child to get a full night's rest.
