Advent ~ Week 2, The Gift of Peace!

Hello Second Grade Families,
Welcome to the second week of Advent.  The week when the "peace" candle is lit on our advent wreaths.  To embrace this season of Advent,  your children will be having a Christmas celebration on December 20th that represents the 4 candles on the advent wreath.  The students will be bringing hope, peace, joy & love to children who are in need with two activities that are in service of others.   Here is what will be taking place for our class Christmas celebration.  All of the second graders will be having a party where they visit five different stations.

The stations that the children will be experiencing are:

  • Station #1 ~  A Craft station (the kids will be creating light up snowmen.)  All of the materials have been purchased.
  • Station #2 ~ Writing station (The students will be writing letters to Santa Clause, or St. Nicholas, to thank him for his generosity.)  The letters will be delivered to Macy's where they contribute money for every letter donated to the St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
  • Station #3 ~ A treat station
  • Station #4 ~ A service project station  The students will decorate bags & then they will place a variety of items inside the paper bags for a child in need.  The bags will be donated to St. Vincent De Paul for children that will be visiting their facility on Christmas Day.  The second graders will be Santa Clause for a child in need!
  • Station #5 ~ Christmas Bingo

Here's where I will need your help!  It would be wonderful to have every single student bring in one pair of warm, adorable socks to place into the Christmas bags that we will be donating to St. Vincent De Paul.  The students are also permitted to bring in one other simple item to place in the bag if they wish to do so.  A variety of dollar store items have already been purchased.  However, perhaps your child may like to send in a small toy or trinket to place in the bag as part of their donation to a child who is in need this Christmas.  Also know, that our second grade "Homeroom Angels" will be sending out an e-mail soon to ask for volunteers that can assist us at our party and for any other odds and ends.  Thank you in advance for all of your efforts!  It's my hope to assist the students in understanding that it's in the spirit of giving that we receive!

    ELA

    ELA (Strong Communicators)
    Spelling ~ Long o (o, oa, ow)
    Grammar ~ Using Proper Nouns
Writing ~ Opinion Writing, Persuasive Essay
Target Skills ~ Author's Purpose, Biography, Summarize

    Math (Resourceful Learners)
The students will continue working in unit 4 from our Go Math series!  This unit focuses on double digit addition and subtraction.

    • Please know that your children have access to IXL and can practice their basic math facts on line at home to assist them in mastering their basic math facts.  Your child's IXL information is located inside the front cover of your child's agenda.   Every child received their IXL username and password on a bright yellow slip of paper and it was stapled to the front cover inside their planner.

Social Studies (Thoughtful Citizens)
The students will continue learning about how children celebrate Christmas around the world.

Religion (Active Christians)
The students will continue to have daily Advent devotionals that are known as, "The Jesse Tree."  These lessons teach the students about the lineage of Christ.  The lessons also teach the students how to look up readings from a bible and how to reflect upon what was read.  The Jesse Tree is a great way to promote the true gift of Christmas which is the birth of Jesus Christ.
  • The students will learn from the "Jesus Our Life" religion series.  This week's focus is "Our Savior is Born."
  • The students will attend our all school Mass on Friday, December 14th

Homework

For the entire month of December, all of the students will need to read for 15 to 20 minutes nightly and fill out their reading log.  The students will also need to study for their weekly Spelling test that will take place on Friday.  These are the only two assignments that the students will need to complete for this week.

If a child does not return their homework completed on Friday, they will have to "clip down" on our behavior chart and they will also have to give me four raffle tickets.  One ticket for every night they chose not to do their homework.
