Happy Birthday Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. !

Hello Second Grade Families,
Welcome back from your extended three day weekend!  Our class has been celebrating the life of
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. for the last week, and we will continue our lessons on this selfless man's legacy.  Dr. King taught us what it means to stand up for what is right, to embrace faith and morals, and to be people of peace even during times of adversity.  Your children are learning all about the life and the history of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.    Thank you Dr. King for teaching us what it means to be a person for others.  Please continue reading to discover all that will be taking place in the second grade classroom and right here at ACS.

Math (Resourceful Learners)
The students will continue their learning from chapter 5 in their "Go Math" learning series.  This unit will focus on double digit subtraction with and without regrouping. In class, the second graders have begun math "sprints" to assist them in the skill of "automaticity" with their basic addition and subtraction facts.

Religion (Active Christians)
The students will be focusing on Christ's parables.  The parables that the class will have lessons on are:

  • The Prodigal Son
  • The Lost Sheep
  • The Mustard Seed

These parables will also assist your children as they prepare for their upcoming sacrament of First Reconciliation.  Also, our next STREAM activity is religious based and the students must have knowledge of a parable to complete their upcoming STREAM event.  More news will be announced about our STREAM activity next week!

All students will attend Mass on Friday, January 25th at 8:15am.

Social Studies (Thoughtful Citizens)
The students will continue learning about American History and about the Three Branches of the American Government.  Your children are already off to a great start and they are absolutely loving our Social Studies lessons.

Ask your child who America was originally ruled by and what was his name?
Ask your child what country use to rule the 13 colonies?
Ask your child why the colonists were angry with the King of England?
Ask your child how America became a free nation?

I am so proud of your kids engagement in the area of Social Studies.  They are working so hard and are learning so much about the sacrifices made by the colonists, and our founding fathers, in order to create a free and independent nation!

Here are the main focuses of our lessons.
  • The thirteen colonies
  • The American Constitution
  • The Three Branches of Government
  • The idea that our country was founded as a representative, constitutional, democratic republic
  • American Symbols

Homework

  • Read nightly for at least 15 minutes and log your reading!
  • Study your weekly spelling words for Friday's test!
  • If a child does not complete and return their homework on Friday, it will be reflected on our Class Dojo website, as well as, on the child's report card.  The child will also have to "clip down" in our classroom and give me four raffle tickets.  One ticket for everyday that they didn't do their homework.
