The End of Trimester 2!

Hello Second Grade Families,
The second trimester ended last Friday and your child will be bringing home their report card with the grades that they each earned at the end of this week (Friday, March 1st).  When your child's report card arrives home, please take a moment to sit with your child to praise them for the areas that they excelled in and to also discuss the areas where they need to grow.  In the second grade classroom, the children and I always talk about our gifts (our strengths) and our challenges (individual focus areas to help us grow).  Your children know that my gift is in the language arts, but they also know that algebra was my achilles heal when I was in high school.  Please also take a moment to talk to your child about their humanity.  For example, is your child friendly, gentle, or helpful?  If so, those are gifts they easily share with others, which benefits everyone that they come in contact with.  However, it is also important to talk with your child about the human traits they struggle with.
Here are some examples:

Does your child struggle with how they interact with others?
Is your child respectful towards their peers and with adults?
Does your child take care of what they have?
Do they listen the first time when given a task to do?

These are all ideas to help make your child's report card more meaningful.  It will also open up the lines of communication between you and your child about the value of education and the importance of building our individual character.
I hope that this information is helpful and here's to completing our last trimester strong!
Please continue reading to discover all that will be taking place both in the second grade and right here at ACS for this week.

Please note, that the second graders could use some extra practice in memorizing their subtraction facts.  There are many free websites and I-pad apps that can assist your child in memorizing their basic subtraction facts.
Below you will find some suggestions.

  • Sushi Monster (I-Pad app)
  • Splash Math for Second Graders (I-Pad app)
  • mathplayground.com
  • IXL
  • multiplication.com (click on subtraction games tab)
  • Also, don't forget that good old fashioned flash cards can assist your child too!

The students will continue learning the following religious concept utilizing the Jesus Our Life religion series.

  • Asking Forgiveness

The students will continue to practice the Act of Contrition Prayer to prepare them for their First Reconciliation.

Homework

Dear Families,
Help!  Some of the students are starting to slide in the area of homework.  Please know that the homework that is given in the second grade is very reasonable.  Every child should read for 15 minutes and fill out their reading log.  On Thursday nights, every second grader should be preparing for their weekly spelling test.  These are the regular homework assignments for grade two.  I philosophically do not believe in taking away recess from a child due to not bringing their homework, because at this young age, they need to be able to burn off energy and to get their wiggles out prior to returning to class.  I am greatly appreciative of your support and efforts in this area.  Thank you in advance for your help!

  • Read nightly for at least 15 minutes and log your reading!
  • Study your weekly spelling words for Friday's test!
  • If a child does not complete and return their homework on Friday, it will be reflected on our Class Dojo website, as well as, on the child's report card.  The child will also have to "clip down" in our classroom and give me four raffle tickets.  One ticket for everyday that they decided not to complete their homework.
