Learning is in full swing!

Hello Second Grade Families,
I hope that your weekend was a wonderful one filled with fun moments with your kids and some much needed down time.  Your second graders are acclimated to the second grade academic routine, procedures, and behavioral expectations within our classroom and at ACS.  This week will be filled with many engaging learning activities which includes learning about spiders within our reading series!  Ewwwwww spiders!  Please continue reading this newsletter to discover all that will be taking place inside our classroom community and right here at ACS.

Math
The students have begun their academic learning lessons on the concept of money.
Counting change is quite difficult for kids, so here is a parent tip.  Empty your pockets or coin purse and spread the random coins on the table.  Have your child identify each coin and their value.  Then, have your child practice counting different coin combinations.  We have begun practicing this skill inside our classroom using pretend coins (money manipulatives for kids).   Also, your children have all visited IXL during our class computer time.  IXL has a variety of "money" math activities that can be practiced at home utilizing a device, or a home computer.

Social Studies
The students will continue their geography lessons.

These lessons will include:

  • how to read a map
  • the components and parts of a map
  • identifying and locating the 7 continents and the 5 oceans of our world
  • identifying different types of landforms
  • applying knowledge to answer questions utilizing a map
  • designing and creating a map

Religion
The students will utilize their Jesus Our Life religion series to focus on the following concept:
God is Offended.  This chapter identifies sin to the children through the story of Adam and Eve.
It also helps the children to understand that God wanted to send us a savior to save us from our sins, and that Jesus is the savior promised to us by God the Father.

The students will be going to Mass as a school community on Friday, September 20th at 8:10 am.

The students will pray throughout their school day and this includes at daily Pledge/Prayer, before lunch, and prior to dismissal.

This week, the students will be expected to study for their Spelling test that will take place on Friday, September 26th.

The students are also expected to read nightly for 15 to 20 minutes and to complete a simple reading log.               On Thursday evenings, please sign your child's agenda and also sign off on your child's reading log.

All homework is due on Friday's!  If a child doesn't return their homework, they will be required to "clip down" on our behavior chart and they will have to submit one of their raffle tickets for the infraction.  This is to keep the children accountable and to foster the ideal of being responsible.
