I Have A Dream

Hello Second Grade Families,
Welcome back from the extended weekend.  This week your children will be learning more about the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  Our class will also be learning about what it means to be an individual that has "empathy" through a Class Dojo video series.  In class, we will be more intentional in focusing on being courteous towards one another and in showing kindness to honor the life of Dr. Martin King Jr.

ELA

Essential question that the students will answer:
Why is it important to keep trying even if something is difficult to do?
Target Skills:  Sequence of Events, Formal and Informal Language, Visualize
Writing Focus:  Narrative Writing
Grammar Focus:  Subject-Verb Agreement
Spelling Focus:  i, ugh, ie, y

Review and Challenge Words:  by, why, behind, lightning

Math
The students will continue their lessons on double digit addition with and without regrouping.

Social Studies
The students will continue to learn about the three branches of the American Government.   The second graders have already learned that the U.S. Constitution is the document that holds the
"Laws of the Land" for America.
The three branches are the Executive Branch (enforces laws), Legislative Branch(writes our laws), Judicial Branch(interprets the laws).  The students are learning about who works in each branch and what is the job of each branch.  They are also going to learn that these three branches were created to keep a "separation of powers" in order to keep balance in our government.

Religion

The students will continue learning about parables.  Last week, the students learned about the "Mustard Seed" parable.  This parable taught the children that the Kingdom of God can be compared to a mustard seed because heaven is a place that is always growing and it is a sanctuary for souls.  This week the students will learn about "The Prodigal Son."   This lesson will prepare the children for the sacrament of Reconciliation because it teaches that our God is a forgiving God who wants us to be in union with him.

The students will pray throughout their school day and this includes at daily Pledge/Prayer, before lunch, and prior to dismissal.

The students will attend our school wide Mass on Friday, January 24th at 8:10 am.
