Welcome to Holy Week!

Hello Second Grade Families,
Welcome to Holy Week.  The week where we relive Palm Sunday, The Last Supper, the Passion of Christ, and await the gift of the Resurrection.  Below you will find a link to free Holy Week activities that you may choose to do with your children.

Free Holy Week Resources from the Sophia Institute

May you all have a blessed Holy Week and may you feel the presence of Christ amidst our own trials, sufferings, and tribulations.  May God guide us and protect us during this most challenging time.

Here's this week's schedule for your second grade children:

Please know that the students are going to be moving into new mathematical content that focuses on measurement.  Typically, I do not have the students complete every lesson within their GO MATH books in regards to this content.  Instead, I carefully select the lessons that will best serve the students and assist them in their mathematical knowledge.

The students will:

  • Complete a skill page that focuses on contractions (this is a reviewed concept)
  • complete lesson  8.2 from their "Go Math" textbooks (the students are moving into a new concept which will be focusing on measurement of inches)

Thursday
It's Holy Thursday!  Some families may want to reenact the Last Supper with your children.  The Last Supper took place on the Jewish holiday that's known as "The Passover."  Jews today still practice this holiday with a "Seder Meal."  Christ told us that he is "the living bread" and the Last Supper took place during a Seder meal, however, we as Catholics know that Christ would be the sacrificial lamb who would save us all from our sins.  You may choose to click the link below to recreate "The Last Supper" for your family.

The Diocese of Phoenix is also providing resources to all of our families as we practice Holy Week together.  The link is also being provided below.

Friday
Today is Good Friday!  Let's focus on the Stations of the Cross today!  It's a Holy Day!
12:00 to 3:00 are the hours when we reflect upon the crucifixion of Christ.

Below I am providing a link where you can pray the Stations of the Cross together as a family.

Optional Learning Enrichment Activities!

Science ~ The students will continue learning about the lifecycle of plants!
Choose an activity from your folder to assist you in learning about the following:
  • The parts of a plant
  • How a plant grows
  • What is a greenhouse? (I left a mini "Greenhouse" experiment for all of the kids to enjoy at home.  Lima beans work great for this activity!
  • How do seeds function? (I left an experiment for all of the children to study seeds.  Any seeds from home will work, but Lima beans work wonderfully well.)
  • What parts of a plant do you eat?  Can you identify the different parts of plants that you eat?
Here are some science related videos to assist the children in their learning about plants and their lifecycles.  It's a good idea to assist the children in understanding that all living creatures have life cycles, and even we human people have a lifecycle too.

The following links and or activities are completely optional, but I thought that that some families may want some fun family based ideas during this very difficult time in our world's history.
  • Play Scrabble (Great game for spelling skills)
  • Play a game of monopoly (Enhances our money skills)
  • Put a puzzle together!
  • Create an art time!
  • Our family has been playing an "On line" Crazy 8's game, which is a lot like Uno with aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents.  The game can be found in the app store:  Game Pigeon (there are many other games that you can play with this app as well.)
