It's the last week of school!

Hello Second Grade Families,
We have arrived at the very last week of school!  This week is going to be super simple as I am now busily grading assessments, working on your child's report cards, and completing cumulative files for your children.  Inside your children's summer gift from me was a "memory book" for the students to work on.  I'd highly encourage having your children complete a few pages each day to assist them in practicing their writing skills.

Also, have you heard of the "summer slide?"  The summer slide is a term educators use to explain children "sliding back" in their learning due to not engaging in any academic activities over the course of the summer.  However, there's a way to prevent your child from experiencing the summer slide.  Research indicates, that students who read daily and practice their math skills often avoid the summer slide.  Here are a few tips to assist your child this summer.

  1. First, have your child choose two chapter books to read over the course of the summer.  One book should be a nonfiction book, such as a biography of a historical figure.  The second chapter book should be a fiction book of your child's choosing.  Have your child write two to three sentences summarizing what they read each day inside a notebook of their own choosing.
  2. Secondly, your child may continue to practice their math skills utilizing IXL, or in a math based workbook.
Last of all, many sites have a great summer workbook that I highly recommend to exiting second graders to utilize over the summer months.  It's titled Summer Bridge Activities from Second Grade to Third Grade.  Below you will find the image of the book and the link to Target where you may choose to purchase it.

Please know that I always gave my own children the end of the month of May and the first week of June off from any at home academic activities.  Once the second week of June arrived, they had to work in their academics.   They both have also attended summer school almost every summer to keep them academically  on track, but I know that this summer there will look quite different due to the pandemic.  However, these set expectations have served them both well as they prepared for the next grade level and thought it was important to pass on to our ACS families.

Please continue reading to discover what this school week's schedule will look like.
