Welcome to Our Second Grade Community!

Hello Second Grade Families at Annunciation Catholic School!  My name is Megan Connell and I am your child's second grade teacher.  What a blessing it is to have your child in the second grade for the 2020-2021 school year!

Please know that this site will serve as our weekly second grade newsletter.  Every Sunday evening,  you will be receiving an updated newsletter that is sent directly to your "inbox."  So, please continue reading to discover what will be taking place within our classroom community and right here at Annunciation Catholic School.

I know that beginning the school year in a distance learning format is not what any of us had hoped for and we teachers are eagerly anticipating returning to a regular classroom setting.  Please know that the   K-2 teachers are all working together to create a positive learning experience for your children utilizing Google Classroom.  The K-2 teachers have also each created our own "interactive classrooms" using the Google Classroom platform.  During the first few days of school, each teacher will introduce the students to this interactive method of learning and how it will work.  Please know that when you visit ACS this week, you will be given your child's "Yellow Friday Folder."  Inside the folder, are directives on how to register your child into the Google Classroom for the second grade.  Your child will need to be registered prior to our first day of school which is August 17th.  Also,  inside your child's folder is their Google Classroom Username and Password along with their IXL login information.  IXL can be utilized to enhance all of your child's academic skills, however, I tend to utilize it the most in the area of math.  Once we return to our regular daily classroom setting, please have your child return their yellow Friday folder as they will need it for the remainder of the school year.  Below, you will find a recommended daily schedule for your children's learning.  However, I know that parents are working while balancing their child's distance learning lessons.  Please know that I am flexible and understand the stress you all are under, so please feel free to have your child complete their learning lessons at a time that works best for you and your schedule.  Our "Live" 9:00 to 9:30 daily meetings are mandatory so that attendance can be taken and so that we can relay directions to your children.

Second Grade Schedule:

  • 9:00 to 9:30 ~ Morning Meetings (Attendance, Pledge, Prayer, Directives for students) Your child needs to be in their uniform shirt and sitting at either a desk, or a table.  This sets the tone that learning and school is important and that wearing our uniform shows both pride and respectfulness.
  • 9:30 to 10:00 ~ Snack time and play time
  • 10:00 to 10:30 ~ Language Arts
  • 10:30 to 11:00 ~ Assigned Work Time for Students
  • 11:00 to 11:30 ~ Recorded Math Lessons will be provided for your students daily via YouTube and will be uploaded to the "Interactive Classroom" for all of the second graders.
  • 11:30 to 12:30 ~ Lunch and play time
  • 12:30 to 1:00 ~ D.E.A.R. Time (Drop Everything and Read Time)  I will pre-teach this to your children during the first week of school
  • 12:00 to 2:00 ~ Dr. Pristash has approved the option for 5 students a day to visit ACS inside their designated classroom to have learning lessons with their teacher.  I will be sending out a schedule in the next day, or two,  for students to come to our classroom on a specific day of the week to have lessons directly with me if their parents choose to do so.
  • 2:00 to 3:00 ~ Office Hours (If you have any questions, concerns, or need any clarification in any given area,  I will be available every day from 2:00 to 3:00 to respond to your messages until we are able to return to our regular academic setting.)

Also, in the second grade, it is critical to foster organizational skills.  In order to assist the students in becoming organized learners, every content area will be color coded.  Each subject will have the following designated colors:

Religion/Life Journal ~ Red
Language Arts ~ Purple
Math ~ Blue
Social Studies and Science ~ Green
Special Areas ~ Yellow

This color coding system will also be utilized in the weekly newsletter to effectively communicate what learning will be taking place in each subject area for the week.

Assisting the children in growing socially and emotionally is also an integral part to being in the second grade and I will do my best to incorporate these into our "Interactive Classroom"  until we return to our regular classroom setting.

It's not my intent to overload you during this very challenging time and I hope that the Google Classroom will bring you and your children comfort and a sense of some normalcy as we navigate the beginning of the second grade school year together.  Your partnership this school year is greatly valued and appreciated.  Please know that I am here to help and guide you and your children to the best of my ability.  My prayers are with you and your families as we all pray for brighter days up ahead.  Stay happy, healthy, and holy!  God Bless!
