Let's Continue to Fall Into Learning!

 

Hello Second Grade Families,

Can you believe that summer is over and the season of "Fall" is now upon us.  Here's to cooler days up ahead, hot apple cider, and pumpkin flavored fall treats!  It's also the season that brings Halloween and Thanksgiving!  Here's to the gift of the season of Fall.  Please continue reading to discover what will be taking place inside your child's second grade classroom and right here at ACS.

ELA


Essential question that the students will answer:  
What are animal homes like?
Target Skills:  Text and Graphic Features, Using Context, Questions
Writing Focus:  Informative Writing 
Grammar Focus:  More Plural Nouns
Spelling Focus:  Common Final Blends(nd, ng, nk, nt, ft, xt, mp)

Math

The students will continue learning about place value and place value concepts.  

Social Studies

The students will continue learning about Geography. 

The key concepts that the second graders will be focusing on are:

  • Naming and Identify the Seven Continents (standard taught)
  • Naming and Locating the Five Oceans (standard taught)
  • Understanding how to read a map (standard taught)
  • Identifying a compass rose  (standard taught)
  • Learning how to locate the directions on a map (north, south, east, and west) (standard taught)
  • Understanding what the equator is and where it's located on a map/globe (standard taught)
  • Understanding what the prime meridian is and where it's located on a map/globe (standard taught)
  • Identifying different types of landforms (This will be our focus for this week.)
  • Applying knowledge to answer questions utilizing a map (standard taught)
  • Designing and creating a map 

Religion

The students will experience a school wide virtual "Community Prayer" service on Monday at 8:15am.

The students will utilize the "Jesus Our Life" religion series focusing on "God Made Us."

The students will be attending Mass as a school community on Wednesday, September 30th at 8:15 am.

The students will pray throughout their school day and this includes at daily Pledge/Prayer, before lunch, and prior to dismissal.

The second graders will also be learning the prayer for the intercession of St. Michael the Archangel per Father Chad's request.  All of the ACS students will be saying the prayer each time we attend Mass on Wednesday mornings.

Monday ~ Art at 12:10

Tuesday ~ P.E. at 2:25

Wednesday ~ Mass Day at 8:15 a.m. 

                        Spanish 8:40 and Music at 1:00


Thursday ~    Spanish at 12:00 and P.E. at 2:25

Friday ~ No special area classes


Upcoming Events

September 28, Monday: Community Prayer led by 8th grade. More details to come.

September 29, Tuesday: Family Dine out Fundraiser: Chipotle 5355 E Carefree Hwy Building E Cave Creek, AZ 85331. For take out and dine in.

September 30, Wednesday: Picture Day. All students in full ACS uniform, blue polo. Girls in K-3 may wear the jumper with the white peter pan blouse, 8th grade light blue polo. Only approved hair accessories. Please review the student handbook for the uniform policy.

September 30, Wednesday: Student Council speeches and elections. Grades 4 – 8 will vote.


Homework
This week, the students will be expected to study for their Spelling test that will take place on Friday, October 2nd.
Please know that every child has been taught and is expected to write their full list of Spelling words inside their agenda every week. 

The students are also expected to read every single night for 15 to 20 minutes.  
This week, please also expect your child to bring home a nightly reading log.  The reading logs are sent home every Monday and need to be returned to school on Friday's.  
After your child reads, he, or she, will need to fill out their nightly reading log.  Please also know that the students are taught in class how to properly fill out and utilize their reading logs.


On Thursday evenings, please sign your child's agenda and also sign off on your child's reading log.
