Hello April!

Hello Second Grade Families!

Welcome back from Spring Break!  This week, we will be hitting the ground running as we now prepare our second graders in becoming future third graders.  Sometimes, as a school year enters into its last trimester, students can lose their "Grit," or tenacity to work to their full potential.  Please know that I will continue to promote and foster hard work within our second grade classroom and the need to give one's full effort in their class work.  Here's how you can help at home!

  • Homework is always due on Fridays and a new reading log will be handed out this week
  • Have your child keep their backpack clean and organized.  When my children were young, Friday afternoons were always empty and organize your backpacks!  Have your child do the organizing as this is a very important life skill that will benefit your child's organizational skills in the future.
  • There will be a Spelling Test this week that will take place on Friday.  Please have your child practice at home!
  • Now that we are in the last trimester of school, every second grader is very capable of writing three to five fully complete sentences with proper punctuation.  Hold this expectation at home when your child is completing any of their assignments.  Your child should now be completing their reading log each night and all second graders should write both legibly and fluently when it comes to their homework assignments.  Taking pride in our work begins in the elementary grades and will bloom in every sequential school year if we all hold the children to this expectation.
  • Also, no toys are allowed at school!  Unless your child has a coupon to bring a special toy to school, please have your second grader keep their toys at home.
Please continue reading to discover all that will be taking place both inside the second grade classroom and right here at ACS!

Math
The students will continue to learn about measurement concepts.

Science
The students will continue learning all about plants.  Concepts that are being  taught include the parts of a plant, the lifecycle of plants, identifying parts of plants that we eat, (examples:  carrots are roots, corn is a seed that we eat, cabbage is a leaf, asparagus is both a stem and a flower that many people enjoy eating, etc.)  The students will also experience a wide variety of hands on plant themed activities and some experiments too which will include embracing conservation ideas to best serve the beautiful gift God gave us...Earth.  Learning about plants and animals is so much fun and is very engaging to second graders.  What a gift!

The students will have another sacramental preparation lesson this week.

The students will pray throughout their school day and this includes at daily Pledge/Prayer, before lunch, and prior to dismissal.

The second graders will continue praying for the intercession of St. Michael the Archangel per Father Chad's request.  All of the ACS students will be saying the prayer each time we attend Mass on Wednesday mornings.   The students have memorized the "Act of Contrition" and are prepared to say this prayer when they receive the holy sacrament of Reconciliation.
