Welcome to the Month of May!

Hello Second Grade Families,

May has arrived and we are entering into the last four weeks of school.  During the month of May, your child's reading homework is "optional."  However, the students will have Spelling words to learn and that they will be tested on for the next three weeks.  Any child that chooses to continue their nightly reading utilizing an "Engage It" reading log and returns it on May 21st will earn extra points towards their homework grade.  I'll also have a simple treat for the kids who choose to continue their nightly reading for this month.

Please continue reading to discover all that will be taking place both inside the classroom and right here at ACS.

Essential question that the students will answer:

How do some animals change as they grow?
Target Skills:  Story Structure, Conclusions, Infer/Predict
Writing Focus:  Opinion Writing
Grammar Focus:  Contractions
Spelling Focus:  Words with oo, ew, ue, ou
Bonus Words for this week's Spelling List:  zoo, noon,  shampoo,  balloon

Math
The students have completed all of their math lessons inside their "Go Math" textbook.  So, I am going to begin teaching the children basic multiplication concepts to get them ready for when they enter the third grade.  The students will also be able to practice their skills utilizing IXL during our class learning time.

Social Studies
The students will continue learning about economics.
Key concepts include:  What is bartering? , wants verses needs,  goods and services, and saving verses spending.

Science
The students planted wildflower seeds last Friday.  This week, the students will be keeping a simple plant journal to record how their plant is growing and changing.

The students will have another sacramental preparation lesson this week.

The students will attend an all school Rosary at St. Gabriel's Church at 2:15 pm on Monday, May 3rd.

The students will pray throughout their school day and this includes at daily Pledge/Prayer, before lunch, and prior to dismissal.

The second graders will continue praying for the intercession of St. Michael the Archangel per Father Chad's request.  All of the ACS students will be saying the prayer each time we attend Mass on Wednesday mornings.   The students have memorized the "Act of Contrition" and are prepared to say this prayer when they receive the holy sacrament of Reconciliation.
