Advent ~ Week 2 ~ Peace

Peace be with you Second Grade Families,

Welcome to the second week of Advent.  May this week bring each of you the gift of peace.  To begin this week,  your children will be attending our all school Rosary on Monday, December 6th.  Monday will also be the feast day of St. Nicholas who is the patron saint of children.  Monday will bring many faith filled blessings and will be a positive start to our week!

Also note, your children will need to prepare for their spelling test which will take place on Friday, and read nightly and log it using their December themed "Engage It" reading log.  Next week, there will be absolutely no homework.  Enjoy the extra time together as a family.

Please continue reading this newsletter to stay up to date on all that will be transpiring both inside the second grade classroom and right here at ACS.

Math

This week, the students will continue working and will complete their unit focusing on subtracting within 100.  The students will then move into the unit which focuses on place value concepts.

If your child struggles with memorizing basic subtraction facts, please know that "Sushi Monster" is a great app found on Apple that can be downloaded onto a device.  It may assist your children in becoming fluent in their basic addition and subtraction facts.

Social Studies
The students will begin learning about Christmas Around the World.  This unit allows the second graders to understand that different countries and/or cultures celebrate Christmas in different ways and that each culture has its own traditions and customs.

Don't forget that every second grader has access to the following websites to assist them in the areas of Reading and Math

  • RAZ Kids (the students may use this site to complete their nightly reading homework)
  • Splash Math Learning (This site will assist your child in mastering mathematical concepts that are taught inside our second grade classroom.)

Homework
  • The students will need to study their Spelling words in order to be best prepared for their Spelling test which will take place on Friday, December 10th.
  • The students are expected to read nightly for a minimum of 15 minutes.  For the next two weeks, the students will need to complete and return their "Engage It" reading log!  The reading log is due on Friday, December 10th.
  • There will be no reading homework the week of December 13th through the 17th!  Enjoy the extra family time that week:)
