Happy Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day!

Hello Second Grade Families,

I hope that this message finds you well and that you each had a wonderful extended weekend.

This week, the students will learn about the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  The message of our lessons will echo Christ's words, "Love one another as I have loved you."

Also, the students have been excitedly learning all about animals, how scientists classify animals, the habitats that animals live in, and now we are moving into learning about a variety of animal lifecycles.

Please continue reading to discover all that will be taking place both inside the second grade classroom and right here at ACS.

Science

The students will continue their lessons that focus on animals!

The second graders are learning about a wide variety of animal habitats, how scientists classify animals (examples: fish, birds, reptiles, mammals, amphibians, etc.), and about animal traits and their behaviors.  It's also a second grade standard that the students begin learning about ecosystems and the importance of conservation.  The desk pets will compliment these lessons and will allow the concepts to become more meaningful to the students.  These concepts will be our focus for the entire month of January.

This week, the students will be focusing on lifecycles.

Religion

  • The students will attend Mass on Wednesday, January 19th at 8:10 a.m. inside St. Gabriel's Catholic Church.
  • The students will utilize their Jesus Our Life textbooks to focus on "I Choose to Love God" this week.
  • The students will continue to practice the Act of Contrition and we will begin learning this prayer to prepare the students for the sacrament of First Reconciliation.

Don't forget that every second grader has access to the following websites to assist them in the areas of Reading and Math

  • RAZ Kids (the students may use this site to complete their nightly reading homework)
  • Splash Math Learning (This site will assist your child in mastering mathematical concepts that are taught inside our second grade classroom.)
  • If time permits, the students will begin learning how to type using our class set of Chrome Books this week!

Homework
The students have a January "Engage It" for their homework this month!  This specific homework will assignment will be due this  Friday, January 21st.  Please don't forget that there is a writing activity that your child will need to complete on the back of the "Engage It" prior to turning it in on January 21st.

The children will also need to study and prepare for their weekly Spelling test which will take place on Friday.
